THE STORY: Week 11 – Exile & Promise

  1. Can you think of specific moments in your life when you felt the ‘homesick’ feeling? What were the circumstances?
  2. The concept of idolatry is discussed all throughout the Bible, as the root cause of the effects of sin. It’s a distorted search to find your deepest needs and desires met through something other than God himself. Perhaps in the past or other parts of the world idolatry might be spotted by little carved statues and offerings. But in the Western world, it’s disguised as normal pursuits in our culture for success, control, safety, or being right. As you reflect on your upbringing, what idolatry might have been passed along to you?
  3. In Ezekiel 37:1-14, the vision describes dry bones in a valley being resuscitated back to life with flesh and bone, and also with the Spirit of the Lord. What strikes you most about that vision? What hopeful promise does it remind you about for your life or our world today?
  4. What spiritual practices have you found to be helpful in connecting with a sense of finding yourself home in God’s presence?
