The Story – A Mission – The Church

THE STORY: Week 15 – The Church

  1. God uses several analogies for the church in Scripture: family; body; light of the world. What analogy would you ‘invent’ for what you have experienced at churches during your lifetime? (Don’t answer with what you think the ‘right’ answer should be – what has been your experience. Social Club? Hospital?)
  2. Read 1 Peter 2:1-12. What words/images does Peter use to describe who we are (or who we are called to be) as members of Jesus’ church now? (i.e. v. 5 – we are ‘living stones’ like Jesus; v. 5 – we are ‘being built up’, so God isn’t finished with me!). What is the impact in the world around us when we embrace our calling as God’s church according to this passage? (see verse 12)
  3. Read Ephesians 4:11-16. What is the role of leaders/pastors according to this passage? What are the goals for all believers? Does this match your view of what pastors/leaders are supposed to do or do you expect them to do most of the work FOR the body instead of raising up others to do the work themselves?
  4. 1 Cor. 12:12-31 describes some of the different roles/gifts we play within the body of Christ.  Either discuss or draw a picture of the part of the body you think you are (Finger; brain; heart etc.) and explain why. Do you feel needed and necessary at LBC?  Why or why not?  What is God calling you to do about it?
